It's vital to use the correct crampons for your activity and that the crampons are suitable for your boots, to help people make these descisions mountain guide Brian Hall (SCARPA boot consultant) devised a simple set of guide lines.

Boots are graded as follows:

B0: Walking boots. Unsuitable for use with crampons as soles and upper's aren't stiff enough and circulation is restricted. (leading to pain and frostbite!)

B1: Hillwalking type boots (e.g. Scarpa SL M3.) Stiffer uppers and soles allow short periods of use (e.g. Crossing snowfields or glaciers)with flexible or C1crampons.

B2: Mountaineering Boots. (e.g. Scarpa Manta M4) Because of the much stiffer uppers and soles flexible or semi-rigid crampons (C1/C2)can be used all day for general mountaineering purposes.

B3: Climbing/Mountaineering boots. (e.g. Scarpa Triolet M5) Fully stiffened with rigid soles allows them to be used with any crampon type for all climbing and mountaineering. However for maximum benefit C2 or C3 crampons should be used as C1 do not normally have the correct set up of points for the kind of work you would do in B3 boots!

Crampon Types:

C1 Crampons: Generally 10 points and flexible, suitable for brief glacier crossing and emergency use. Will fit only B1 graded boots.

C2 Crampons: Normally 12 points, often arranged to allow front-pointing and moderate climbing. Often refered to as semi-rigid and can be used on B2 or B3 boots.

C3 Crampons: Fully rigid, most are suitable for all day use mountaineering, mixed climbing and icefall climbing. Can only be used on B3 boots. You may have noticed that if you own a pair of B3 boots you can use any sort of crampon, however, as previously stated C1 crampons are really not very compatable with B3 boots due to the number and arrangement of the points.
